The Newmarket Handicap

March 7th, 2026 0 comments

The time-honoured Newmarket Handicap down the straight six. It used to be like the charge of the Light Brigade with up to 24 runners! But it’s only 14 runners today with Sydney poaching a couple of the good sprinters. I can’t have Caballus with his head up, and Angel Capital is head up with the jockey up. Gallant Son is very relaxed, head down with a positive strapper, and sports the Moody nose roll. I much prefer clean heads but I managed to ignore it last time last time when I backed the horse for a place in the Oakleigh Plate at $2.30. Wodeton looks a fit standout and is my place bet.

Caballus has the inside barrier (1) and Wodeton the outside (14). They jump and run and Caballus pings straight to the front and is never headed.  I can’t remember the last time a horse led from go to whoa in the Newmarket. Wodeton simply doesn’t finish off and is a distant eleventh. Gallant Son puts in a great race for second and pays $9.50 the place. I think I should’ve stuck with him!
