The Melbourne Cup

Well, I’m dosed up on dopamine. Actually it’s L-dopa, which is converted into dopamine in the brain. Unlike the dopamine molecule it can cross the blood-brain barrier and help improve my slow movement. So I’m here nice and early with my stick and a pocketful of pills. The internationals are the first to arrive at midday. They are all looking good except for Onesmoothoperator who is constantly nodding and tossing up his head. Next I head over to Ciaron Maher who is busy holding up the foreleg of Middle Earth who is feeling very cantankerous on his remaining three legs and vigorously resisting the strapper trying to put on the red ear muffs. The struggles last quite a few minutes until finally the humans win and the hood goes on. I like my horses to be settled and this is not a good sign. Next is Half Yours. Gosh, doesn’t this horse look good! Imperious, indifferent to the excitement, relaxed. Fit. Walking head down. Even better than Caulfield? When it was a standout!

I look at all the Cup runners down the back since it’s too hard to get up to the yard. And to cut a long story short, you can guess the outcome. I backed the winner for the place and Jamie found the gaps and did the rest. A pity she didn’t hold on to her maiden name! I took ten horses in the trifecta and then the same again into the first four. Again, you can guess the outcome. The bad behaviour of Middle Earth cost me ten thousand dollars.

Now I’m thinking next year I might take eleven.

Middle Earth must have calmed down after the ear muffs were on!
